In the early 1980s, a new chapter of faith quietly unfolded in Rukmalgama. Several families from the Dehiwela Church had moved into a newly established housing scheme, bringing with them not only their household belongings but also their desire to remain rooted in worship and fellowship. Recognizing their need, the Local Consistory decided it was both wise and timely to begin a worship service within the scheme itself. Thus, in 1982, a small gathering was held in the living room of a member’s home—an unassuming beginning that would later grow into the Christian Reformed Church of Rukmalgama.
For many years, the congregation continued to meet in homes, cherishing the intimacy of worship and the closeness of fellowship. At the same time, the leadership looked ahead with vision. A fund was established to raise money for land that would secure a permanent home for this ministry. With dedication and sacrifice, a piece of land was eventually purchased. Yet, as the years passed, further reflection led to a different decision. Instead of building on that land, the Consistory chose to invest in a house within the very housing scheme where the congregation had first taken root.
This decision proved to be both practical and providential. The purchased house became the pastor’s residence as well as the congregation’s gathering place. Within its walls, sermons were preached, prayers were lifted, and songs of praise echoed. It was not a grand sanctuary of stone or stained glass, but it carried the essence of church—people united in Christ, worshipping together and serving their community.
Through the decades, the ministry in Rukmalgama has remained steady, carried forward by the faithfulness of its members. The house-church has stood as a symbol of resilience and simplicity, showing that God’s presence is not bound by walls or grandeur but is alive wherever His people gather. The congregation grew, not through outward display, but through the quiet strength of a community determined to remain anchored in Christ.
Rukmalgama is affectionately known as a daughter church of the Dehiwela congregation, a continuation of its mission and a testimony to its vision. At its foundation stands the dedication of Reverend Crosbie de Kretser, whose leadership and care in the early years ensured the fledgling congregation was nurtured and given direction. His role, together with the sacrifices of the members, formed the base on which the church continues to stand.
Today, the Christian Reformed Church of Rukmalgama endures as a faithful witness in its community. From its first gathering in a simple home to its present ministry within a house dedicated to worship, its story is one of perseverance, vision, and God’s unfailing guidance.
