In the heart of the hill country, where mist clings to the tea gardens and narrow roads wind through valleys and streams, the Christian Reformed Church found a new beginning. It was in 1976, when Rev. Reggie Ebenezer was appointed as Minister in charge of outstation work, that the seeds of this ministry were first sown. With a vision to bring the gospel to Sinhala-speaking communities, he journeyed into these hills, carrying with him not only the Word of God but also a heart full of faith and determination.
The early days were marked by simplicity. Small groups gathered in homes, listening eagerly as Rev. Ebenezer preached in Sinhala, making the message of the gospel clear and relatable to their daily lives. Slowly, the gatherings grew, and a fellowship was formed—one that reflected the hopes and struggles of the community it served. Prayer by prayer, visit by visit, the church in Ulapane began to take root.
In time, the need for a permanent place became clear. Through sacrifice, prayer, and the support of the wider church, land was secured. A church building rose on this ground, modest yet strong, offering the people of Ulapane a place to worship, learn and belong. Beside it rose a manse, offering the minister both a residence and a center from which to continue his pastoral care and mission work.
Today, the Christian Reformed Church of Ulapane stands as a living testimony to that vision born in 1976. What began as a small mission point has grown into a lasting presence in the hill country—the church remains a beacon of hope and faith. Rooted in its humble beginnings, it continues to serve the hill country with steadfast devotion, reminding all who enter of God’s enduring presence.
